When it launched in March 2023, Bard used Google’s LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) model. A few months later, Bard got its first major update with the release of PaLM 2 at Google I/O. In December 2023, Google gave Bard its biggest update with the switch to the Gemini Pro model. In February 2024, the Bard brand was discontinued, with the interface now called Gemini. It scored 90% on the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) test, which is better than most human language experts and in line with Google’s past performance.

Gemini Ultra can also understand, explain and generate high-quality code in popular programming languages, Google says, in addition to understanding audio and video content. Adding a more powerful, paid version of the generative AI chatbot is now the common approach. The list includes OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus, Anthropic’s Claude Pro, and Perplexity AI Pro. Quora also offers a subscription service for Poe, its hub for generative AI chatbots. And it fits with the upgrades Google has been making to Bard ahead of the rebrand.

What else is coming to Bard?

This means it can process and understand video, image, audio and text input natively. The problem is nobody outside of Google’s select group of testers has been able to verify the claims. The only thing we know for certain is that it will be powered by Google Gemini Ultra, the most advanced Google AI model. Gemini Nano is being used for on-device AI, powering some of the Samsung S24 and Google Pixel 8 Pro functionality. The most advanced model is Ultra and it is that model that will power the paid-for version of Google Bard when it launches later this year.

At its I/O keynote in May 2023, Google upgraded Bard to use PaLM 2 — a more sophisticated language model that’s smarter and officially capable of generating code. To activate the latter, simply enter a prompt like “Write a Python function that fetches the current trading price of AAPL”. Even though Google has positioned Bard as a ChatGPT competitor, I’ve found that it’s still far from perfect.

Henceforth I never will be Bard

Sure, Bard’s not just a machine-learning model for snappy replies; it’s more of an AI chatbot. Baking it into a messaging app opens the door for it to take the reins on your chats. Now, before Google lets Bard run wild with the replies, the company would probably need to train it a bit more. As a result, users might have to dish out a bit of personal information and text history, so the AI can get the hang of responding just like them. Bard is quite similar to ChatGPT by OpenAI, but it doesn’t have features like generating images, and sometimes it doesn’t respond to a certain prompt, perhaps due to its testing and training limitations. It occasionally takes more time to respond, but considering it’s free, Bard is still good to use for individual purposes and entertainment.

However, there are age limits in place to comply with laws and regulations that exist to govern AI. The name change also made sense from a marketing perspective, as Google aims to expand its AI services. It’s a way for Google to increase awareness of its advanced LLM offering as AI democratization and advancements show no signs of slowing.

While on some level, ChatGPT understood the basics of the assignment, no part of Gemini’s response was coherent or even something I’d want to look at in the first place.
